Our TGMS Curriculum

Intent
Welcome to Tylers Green Middle School, where our curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, inspire learning, and nurture well-rounded individuals. Rooted in our core values of Respect, Belief, Sharing, Pride and Enjoyment, our curriculum intent is to provide a rewarding, inclusive and unmissable educational journey for every child.

At TGMS, we believe in fostering a love for learning that goes beyond the classroom. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to equip students with the knowledge, skills and values they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. Through a blend of academia, creativity and real-world experiences, we aim to empower our students to become confident, resilient and compassionate individuals.

Our curriculum is not just about academic achievement; it's about holistic development. We place a strong emphasis on personal, social and emotional development, nurturing each child's unique talents and strengths. Through a wide range of opportunities, including sports, arts and extracurricular activities, we encourage our students to discover their passions and unleash their full potential.

At the heart of our curriculum is a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility and diversity. We celebrate the uniqueness of every child and strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected and supported. By promoting understanding, empathy and tolerance, we prepare our pupils to thrive in society and become responsible global citizens.

With dedicated and passionate teachers, and a supportive community of governors, parents, families and friends, TGMS provides a nurturing environment where every child can flourish. Together, we inspire curiosity, unlock potential and lay the foundation for lifelong learning. Welcome to a journey of discovery, growth and endless possibilities!

Implementation
The staff and governors at TGMS believe that our pupils deserve a fulfilling curriculum that inspires and motivates their learning with practical, informative and engaging material. We offer a broad curriculum of all National Curriculum subjects and cover these objectives through a wide range of topic matters. Each year group focuses their learning through a series of topic themes over the academic year, which may last a half term or a term, and most subjects are focused around this theme. This cross-curricular approach ensures that children's learning is connected, making it more meaningful and memorable. By experiencing learning in a holistic way, our pupils develop a deeper appreciation for the subject matter, and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. At TGMS, we believe that this interconnected approach to learning fosters curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning in our pupils.

Every subject in our curriculum has been thoughtfully mapped out to ensure progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Key concepts are repeated and revisited throughout the year and across years to ensure retention of learning.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. High-quality language is developed through reading high-quality texts in many subjects; our pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure, as well as for information and understanding. We believe that using language and vocabulary derived from reading will support our pupils' understanding and engagement with the topics they cover. Our History, Geography, Computing, Religious Education and Arts lessons are linked to the topics of the texts read in English and Guided Reading to support our pupils’ understanding. Pupils are encouraged to take chances and challenge themselves across the subjects; we have developed a progressive, skill-based curriculum to promote challenge and build on prior knowledge year after year.

In addition to our school curriculum, we offer the pupils further opportunities for sport, music and well-being through our extracurricular program that runs throughout the year, supporting the pupils’ learning outside of the regular school day.

Impact
By the time our pupils leave TGMS, our aim is for them to be intrinsically motivated and highly engaged with their learning, whilst developing their own interests across the breadth of the curriculum and in wider life, emanating our school's values; this is supported by a wide range of practical skills that they can use as they transition through their time in education and into later life. Our pupils leave us as naturally curious, confident and mature pupils, who have the desire to learn, a dedication to their learning and the ability to use their vocabulary to deduce, summarise, clarify, innovate, explain and justify themselves verbally and in their written work. Essentially, we aim for every pupil to fulfil their potential and beyond, obtaining the knowledge, skills and mindset to become Autonomous Learners.
