SMSC****
At TGMS, we actively promote Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development, which is closely linked to the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
By embedding these values across subjects and school activities, we prepare our pupils to be respectful, responsible, and active members of modern British society. Our approach ensures that children not only learn about these values but also experience them in action through classroom discussions, assemblies, and wider school initiatives.
We encourage pupils to express their views while respecting others, understand the importance of rules in maintaining a safe and fair environment, and develop an appreciation for the diverse society in which we live. Through SMSC and British values, we nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life in today’s world.
The Department for Education states that there is a need:
“To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.
Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We nurture our pupils on their journey through life. Hence, they grow into caring, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the wider world. We encourage them to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and others in our school, our local community and beyond. At Tylers Green Middle School, we actively promote British values in the following ways:
Democracy: Autumn Term 1
Pupils are encouraged to debate topics of interest, express their views and make a meaningful contribution to the school's running. They can do this in many ways e.g. being involved in sports and school council elections, being a team captain to represent and support their houses. Our curriculum, in foundation subjects such as History, allows for discussions and a greater understanding of the democratic system now and in the past.
Mutual Respect: Autumn Term 2
Respect is one of our 5 core values. Pupils understand that respect is shown to everyone, both adults and children. We help them to develop an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures. Staff and pupils are encouraged to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour. Through the PSHE and RE curriculum pupils are encouraged to discuss and respect differences and similarities between people. We offer a culturally rich and diverse curriculum in which all major religions are studied.
Individual Liberty: Spring Term 1
At TGMS, pupils are encouraged, and given the freedom to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment, e.g. Challenging themselves in their learning. They are supported to develop self-knowledge, self-confidence and a growth mindset in all areas of school life. Pupils are taught to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms in a safe way through lessons and following their ‘Super North Star’ ambitions.
Rule of Law: Spring Term 2
We have a clear positive behaviour policy which helps pupils to make good choices about their behaviour. Pupils are enabled to distinguish right from wrong, in the classroom, during assemblies and in the playground. Pupils are encouraged to respect the law, set class rules for themselves and understand the school’s procedures for both positive and negative behaviours using our green, yellow and red card system.
The school has a clearly structured behaviour policy that all stakeholders understand and follow. Visits from the police to talk to the children, encourage pupils to understand that the law protects us and is essential for our well-being and safety. In themed weeks, such as Anti-bullying Week, we educate the children on the 9 Protected Characteristics as defined by the 2010 Equality Act, so that they understand what discrimination is and how to challenge stereotypes.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs: Summer Term
Respect is one of our core values. Children are encouraged to respect themselves and to respect individual differences. This is a fundamental principle that is put into practice in the classroom, around school, in the playground and in assemblies. We are lucky to have a diverse school community encompassing different languages, backgrounds and faiths. We help our children to acquire an understanding of and respect for their own and other cultures and ways of life. We celebrate the languages spoken by some children in the school and the festivals celebrated by some of our families, visit different places of worship and welcome visitors who can widen our children’s horizons even further.
